The Appalachian Trail runs through much of the South Atlantic region. It begins up in Maine and stretches over 2,000 miles through the states of New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia.
While some hikers just go on day hikes, others hike a different section each time they have the opportunity, eventually hiking the entire trail over a span of several years. Some adventurous hikers hike the entire trail during one season.
