As we've seen in this lesson, each movement in graphic design is influenced not only by the artistic traditions of the past, but also the political, historical, and cultural environment of its time. Post Modernism is the most recent movement, but it began long before the age of digital media and social networking. Whatever style replaces it will be built out of the world we see now, informed by our advanced connectivity, instant communication, and boundless access to information.
For this project, you will predict what the next movement in graphic design will look like. You will give it a name, explain its influences (both artistic and cultural), and describe its most common features (is it more organic or mathematical? Does it embrace new technology or seek a more natural design? Does it focus more on getting its point across, or on abstract artistic beauty?). Finally, you will create a design in your new style, combining text and art in an original composition.
Your design can take any form you like. It can be a drawing, a digital composition, or a composite of photos and text. It can be an advertisement, an album cover, a political poster, or an artistic creation: as long as it combines images and text and demonstrates your idea of the future of design.
