Why did the Greensboro Sit-In movement spread and succeed?

This statue at North Caroline A&T State University represents the four students who started the sit-ins.
By the time the Greensboro Sit-In movement ended in victory for the protesters, the local and national media had been covering the event every day for months. Even President Eisenhower had commented on it, declaring that his office was "deeply sympathetic with the efforts of any group to enjoy the rights of equality that they are guaranteed by the Constitution."

As a result, similar protests took place throughout the South, and they generally met with the same anger and occasional violent resistance. But they were also generally successful. Businesses couldn't deal with the hit to their revenue, so they dropped the offending policies and allowed black customers to patronize their stores.
