Memorial Day is our next holiday to explore. Memorial Day first started in the 1860s after the Civil War ended. Many soldiers died in the war, and people started to place flowers on the graves each year to remember them. This holiday was first known as “Decoration Day,” or a day to decorate the graves of soldiers who had died in the war. Later, the holiday name was changed to Memorial Day, a day to remember those soldiers who have died in the fight for freedom. Memorial Day is always celebrated on the last Monday in May.
