What do you think of when you hear Independence Day? You might think of hot dogs, parades, flags, fireworks, and the colors of red, white, and blue. The first Independence Day was not like our celebration at all, though. The colonists led by George Washington were fighting a war against England for many years, and after much hardship, they finally won. The day the war ended and England recognized the colonists as free people was the first Independence Day. The birth of the United States happened on July 4, 1776. This is why we say that Independence Day is also called the Fourth of July. This is why we celebrate this holiday every year in July on the fourth day.
