What makes up our world? Planet Earth is part of the Solar System. Earth is made up of water and land. 71% of the Earth is water-covered, which means 29% is covered with land. Over 7 billion people live on planet Earth. So how is the 29% of the land we live on divided?

Our World
Our world is a unique and complex planet. Seventy-one percent of the Earth is covered in water. What covers the other percent? Land. Twenty-nine percent of the Earth is covered in landmasses.
How is the land organized? The largest landmasses are continents. There are seven continents on Earth. They are separated by geographical boundaries. They are North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Antarctica.
Continents are divided into countries. Each continent has a different number of countries, some larger than others. There are 193 countries on Earth. Countries are separated geographically, politically, and culturally. Countries have their own government.
A state is an area within a country. The United States is a country made up of 50 states. Most countries have states or provinces that separate different areas within the country.
A smaller area within a state is a city. People settle in cities throughout a state. Each red dot on the map represents a city on this map of the state of Texas. Counties are regions within a state with specific boundaries. This map shows the different counties within each state of the country. Multiple cities are located within each county in a state.
