Francisco Vasquez de Coronado from Spain explored the majority of the Southwest region, including the Grand Canyon (pictured above). During his expeditions, he looked for a mythical city he had heard about that was said to be made of gold. He and his friend Antonio Mendoza invested money to fund their travels, but they never found the city of gold. Instead, they discovered the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon, and the Great Plains of Kansas.
