Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was a Spanish explorer who lived from 1499 to 1543.

Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first Spanish explorer to sail to and map the coast of California. He began his explorations under the command of Hernando Cortez as he traveled through the Gulf Coast of Mexico. Then he traveled in uncharted waters up the coast of California near the San Diego Bay.
Cabrillo was hoping to find a trade route from the North Pacific to the North Atlantic, but he was unsuccessful, so he returned to Mexico.
