René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle

Rene-Robert Cavelier, also known as Robert Sieur de La Salle, was a French explorer who searched the Great Lakes area of the United States and Canada. Then he and his men moved west to the Mississippi River. After traveling south down the river, La Salle claimed the entire Mississippi River basin for France. He named the land near the basin Louisiana, after his king. On their trip home, he and his friend Henri da Tonti traveled back up the river and established Fort St. Louis in the area of modern-day Illinois. Tonti stayed to command the fort, while La Salle returned to France for more supplies.

Robert Sieur de La Salle returned to North America in hopes of claiming more land near the Mississippi River for France, but instead, he ended up in Texas where he built another Fort St. Louis. But this outpost did not last long: Native Americans attacked the fort and defeated his men.
