Open-Ended Questions

What is an open-ended question set? How can I use one in a lesson?

Goal:

Goal:

An open-ended question set delivers a set of questions or prompts in a particular sequence, one at a time. Students type their answers into a text field that appears beneath each question. At the end of the question set, all of the student's responses are assembled onto one page.

There are two versions of the open-ended questions set activity. One version simply lists students' answers on the last page or screen. Another version lists students' answers next to correct or sample answers, allowing students to check their own work by comparing their answers to the samples.

The text that appears above an open-ended question set should direct students to type the answer to each question in the space provided. In some cases, the directions should also explain what students should do once all of their answers are assembled—such as copy and paste them into a document to turn in or to review later.

Examples

Open-ended question sets can be used in all subject areas to help students state ideas in their own words or practice a skill more independently. In language arts courses, the activity is often used to help students draft a piece of writing one paragraph or section at a time. It can be used to support and guide students through writing assignments in other courses as well.
