What does the eighth amendment protect against?

razor wire on fence The Eighth Amendment guarantees that neither bail for an accused person nor fines for a guilty person can be excessively high. It also forbids cruel or unusual punishment. Clearly, this amendment requires some interpretation and judgment! A controversial situation occurred in a state in which an official punished criminals by forcing them to work, chained together, along public roads. Some people felt this was “cruel or unusual” punishment. What do you think?
