What rights do the sixth amendment afford American citizens?

High angle view of courtroom The Sixth Amendment guarantees an accused person a “speedy and public trial” by an impartial jury. But it also guarantees that there be enough time to prepare a solid defense. This means that actually bringing a person to trial can take a long time.

The other protections of this amendment are:

1) that an accused person must be informed of the charges against him or her

2) he or she is entitled to a lawyer

3) he or she may have witnesses to testify in his or her behalf.
