There are many types of eye injuries. Some things to remember are:
- Try to identify the eye injury; you may be able to help by flushing the eye.
- Don’t rub the eye.
- Don’t force the eyelid open.
- Keep the victim calm.
- Don’t put pressure on the eyeball.
- Don’t try to remove anything from the eye.
- Contact your coach, parent, or a doctor as soon as possible.
Blunt injuries to the eye
A direct blow to the eye can cause serious injury and bruising. For example, such an injury may occur from flying objects such as balls or from contact with an elbow or hand. In serious cases, the structure of the eye may be torn or ruptured. Internal bleeding may cause a loss of vision, which could be permanent. Because such injuries are potentially dangerous, the victim should receive immediate medical attention. Place a dry, sterile dressing over the injured eye and transport the victim to a hospital as quickly as possible. Keep the victim lying flat. Athletes and others who engage in high-risk contact sports, particularly sports such as racquetball, should wear face guard.
