The fundamental benefits of note taking can be customized to meet your needs.   In addition to the standard Cornell system, you may use any of the strategies covered in this lesson:

  • Linear
  • Key words
  • Classifying
  • Branching
  • Vocabulary list

Each type of note taking has benefits and limitations and is best used in appropriate settings.  Before you begin taking notes, consider the strategies that will be most effective and then apply them.  Think about the ways that you will use your notes and how they will be most helpful to you in completing future assignments and preparing for tests and exams.   With a little planning and consistent practice, you will can develop great note taking skills!
