Sometimes, sections of your notes may be built around a single word or phrase.  In those situations, you may want to choose key word notes, a style of note taking in which the listener records key words, meanings, and examples in a three-column format.   In this note taking strategy, you will write the key words in a column in the left column, details or explanations of the key words in the middle column, and examples, graphics, or other supporting information in the right column.

For instance, if you were taking your Electoral College notes using the key word strategy, one section might look like this:

Key words point you in the direction of a topic or concept, allowing you time to think and reflect.   Because this strategy requires that you spend less time writing, it leaves you with more time to contemplate and consider the information you are learning.
