While most strategies may be used in lectures, you will find that some are most helpful for studying outside of lecture.  For instance, you may find that the classifying note taking strategy, a style of note taking in which the student records information by theme, assigning one theme per page of notes, may be best used for review or research rather than in a listening situation.

Like the key word strategy, classifying is also a three-column note taking strategy.  In this strategy, the columns will include research, notes, and comments.   The first column is used to identify the source of the information.  This might include a presenter, a text, a report, or a media presentation. The middle column is the place you will write the notes that are gathered from the listed source.  Finally, the column on the right gives you a place to write comments about your notes or other information that is related to those notes.

If you were to take your Electoral College notes in this manner, you would probably do some additional research after the presentation and include the information from that research in your notes.   They might look like this:

  • All votes go to party that gets the most votes

Classifying notes require that you note the source of your information and may require that you consider information beyond what is initially presented.  When you are doing research or need to gather further information following a presentation, you may find that the classifying method of note taking is most helpful.
