Question
This is a fun illustration, but does it really show a food chain? Look closely, and think about the things that make up a food chain. Then click the Answer button to see if you were right.
Big fish often eat smaller fish, but the picture doesn’t show a valid food chain. Firstly, the fish look like they are smaller versions of the same species. Sometimes fish eat members of their own species, but food chains show common feeding relationships. So it would more accurately show the other species that each larger species of fish preys upon.
In addition, the illustration doesn’t show any producers. All food chains start with a producer, usually a plant. For sea creatures, the plant is often a type of algae or kelp.
