Sae Young has struggled with learning to speak English since moving to the United States. The first sentence in her chapter reveals Sae Young’s difficulty right away:

Always many people in my house when I was young.

As he did with other narrators in Seedfolks, author Paul Fleischman gives Sae Young a distinct, or uniquely different, voice. To make Sae Young sound like a real person with difficulty speaking English, he makes her sentences short and simple and sometimes grammatically incorrect. These short sentences also help create the tone of the chapter―the narrator’s attitude toward what she describes.
