You know that in English we say I am seventeen years old. Do you remember how to say that in French?

You say J’ai dix-sept ans. Literally, I have seventeen years.

Many common French expressions use the verb avoir, to have,where we use the verb to be in English.

In French, instead of being hungry or thirsty, you have hunger or thirst. Let’s take a closer look.

Avoir soif means to be thirsty.

Le chien a soif.

The dog is thirsty.

Avoir faim means to be hungry.

La femme avec le couteau et la fourchette a faim.

La femme a une assiette. A-t-elle faim?

Oui, elle a faim. Yes, she is hungry.

Et le chat blanc, a-t-il faim?

And the white cat, is it hungry?

Oui, le chat a faim.

Est-ce que ce jeune homme a faim?

Oui, il a très faim.

Et ces garçons, ont-ils faim?

Oui, ils ont très faim.

Voila une troupe de lions. Est-ce que les lions ont soif?

Oui, ils ont soif. Il boivent de l’eau.

Et ces filles, ont-elles soif?

Oui, elles ont soif. Elles font une promenade dans la forêt.
