How can I conduct an investigation to compare the forces between the particles of different substances?

Objectives

Students will:

  1. Describe how solubility and surface tension relate to the forces between the particles of a substance.
  2. Plan and conduct an investigation to gather evidence about the solubility or surface tension of a substance and relate it to the forces between particles of the substance.

Skills Needed

Students must be able to:

  1. Describe the difference between ionic and covalent bonds.
  2. Explain what electronegativity means and how it is used to determine the type of bond that will form between two atoms.

Materials Needed

Students will need:

  1. a way to measure amounts (measuring cups, spoons)
  2. a way to measure temperature (meat or candy thermometers)
  3. cups, bowls, or plates to hold substances
  4. common substances found in the kitchen such as pepper, salt, sugar, oil, milk, or dish detergent
  5. other common household substances such as hairspray, cleaners, toothpaste, or rubbing alcohol
