You know how to talk about some of the classes you might have during the week. Now, find out how to talk about some extracurricular activities. Read through the table below and click the audio button to hear how each vocabulary word sounds.

instruments and activities
Activities
un match
a game, a sporting contest
entraînement
practice, training
une leçon
a lesson
un rendez-vous

Most of these vocabulary words get paired with the word de to talk about a game or practice for a particular sport or activity. For example, in France, tennis and rugby are popular sports, so you could attend un match de tennis ou un match de rugby. Soccer, by far the most popular sport in France and the whole world, is called le football or le foot. Click to hear how these expressions sound.

For example:

un match de tennis (a tennis match)
un match de rugby (a rugby game or match)
un match de foot (a soccer game)

Other activities follow the same pattern, just add de. Click the audio buttons to hear how this sound as well.

For example:

L’entraînement de foot (soccer practice)
Une leçon de guitare (a guitar lesson)
Un concert de rock (a rock concert)

The word de can have different meanings in French. Sometimes it means from, and sometimes it means of. Instead of going to soccer practice or guitar lessons, you go to practice of soccer and lessons of guitar in French.

This sounds odd to English speakers, but it’s a very common way of saying things in French, as well as in Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese.

Now, let’s practice some more. Read the French sentence, then select the sentence in English that matches it.
