To make plans, to discuss events, or to talk about school, it’s useful to know the days of the week in French. On the French calendar, the week starts with Monday. Here are all the days of the week in French.

lundi Monday

mardi Tuesday

mercredi Wednesday

jeudi Thursday

vendredi Friday

samedi Saturday

dimanche Sunday

French also uses the expression c’est for it is. Ce means it and est is the he, she or it form of the verb to be, être. When ce is combined with est, the letter e is dropped to form C’est.

For example, in this inspirational quote, Ce n’est pas means It is not, and c’est means it is.

The quote says Ce n’est pas mon rêve, c’est ma vie.

It’s not my dream, it’s my life.

Let’s look at some examples of ce and c’est in action.

Quel est le jour de la semaine? Quel jour de la semaine est-il?

You could respond with

C’est lundi.

It’s Monday.

C’est vendredi!

How about in this image? Quel jour est-ce?

C’est le week-end. It’s the weekend.

C’est samedi ou dimanche. It’s Saturday or Sunday.
