How is balance found within a design?

Unity

When a design is unified, there is a harmonious relationship between all parts of the artwork, creating a sense of completeness. Similar to repetition, unity connects the different aspects of a design with common elements.

In this design, the menu contains a variety of images associated with cooking, but they're all unified by the simple chalk style the artist uses.

Unity is one of the more abstract concepts to understand. A test for unity is to try to imagine the design elements broken apart into different pieces like a puzzle. If you could then mix those with the pieces of other designs and still pick out the ones from the original design, then it is unified. The elements feel and appear as if they belong with each other and work well together.

Variety

Successful artwork normally includes more than one element. To ensure visual interest, artists will use several elements of design to hold the viewer’s attention and to guide the viewer’s eye through the artwork. In general, a good design will have a variety of lines, shapes, sizes, colors, and values. These elements may change throughout the work to enhance the overall aura and success of the artwork.

Finding a balance between unity and variety will also help create stronger designs. This image shows unity by repeating the hand-prints and variety by changing the colors of the hands.
