It is important to follow the rules of the road when you are riding a bicycle. You need to follow the same traffic laws as drivers, including stopping at red lights. Also, you need to make sure to follow some extra precautions since you do not have turn signals on your bicycle.
- You must give a hand signal at least three seconds before stopping or turning.
- Always check to make sure your hand signals have been seen and understood.
- Look back (two blocks) to check that there is room for you to turn, pull out, or pass safely.
Always use hand signals when turning or stopping to alert other cyclists and drivers of your intentions. Study the image to the right and start using these hand signals, even if you are riding in a bike lane.
