Carlos takes his virtual-reality games seriously. In fact, when he is not in school or doing homework, he is gaming. For hours. Every day. If his parents let him, Carlos would eat every meal sitting at the computer. As it is, he keeps a supply of snacks his room so that he doesn’t have to get up and go to the kitchen. Sometimes he doesn’t leave his chair for hours. And that’s fine according to Carlos.
But while Carlos may be healthy now, he won’t be for long if he is active only in virtual reality. In real life, our bodies are made to move. Walking, running, lifting, pushing, carrying, bending, climbing, and dancing are just a few of the activities that keep our muscles in shape, our blood pumping, and our lungs healthy. In fact, sitting for long periods is one of the worst things a person can do for his or her health. Sorry, Carlos!
In this lesson, you will learn about the benefits of a physically active lifestyle and the risks of an inactive lifestyle. You will also examine some easy ways to add more physical activity into your life.
