We know that a simple sentence has two parts - a subject and a predicate. What about a compound sentence?
When you combine two simple sentences using a comma and a conjunction, you get a compound sentence.
Let's take a look at some examples below. The first column of the table below shows two simple sentences. Click on the sentences to see how they can be turned into one compound sentence. Pay attention to the words in bold - those are conjunctions.
Simple Sentences | Compound Sentence |
Most spiders spin webs. They use their webs to catch food. | Most spiders spin webs, and they use their webs to catch food. |
Some spiders live in buildings. Many other spiders live outside. | Some spiders live in buildings, but many other spiders live outside. |
