Grouping to Multiply

You can place items in groups to multiply just like you can place them in rows to make arrays.

Look at the three groups. Each group has four animals - four puppies, four horses, and four lions.

How many animals in all?

You can write the sentence 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 or 4 x 3 = 12.

You can write the turn around multiplication fact 3 x 4 = 12.
