Portugal is also a founding member of NATO, which stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization--an intergovernmental military alliance between 30 North American and European countries. In this agreement, if one country is threatened by another country, the countries in this alliance will defend the threatened country. Portugal has good relations with most countries in the world. For example, Portugal and Brazil have a strong alliance and a dual citizenship program. However, there are still some unresolved disputes between Spain and Portugal about land. Over the years, Portugal has needed some economic support from countries that are its allies. Portugal relies on these good relationships with other countries for both foreign aid and financial support. |
