Iceland's biggest allies are the Scandinavian countries of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Because these countries share a similar culture and way of life, their alliance is strong. Iceland also has a good relationship with the United States. During World War II, the U.S. sent troops to Iceland to prevent Germany from taking over Iceland's ships and airplanes. After the war, the U.S. helped Iceland build its economy. An agreement was signed that the U.S. would provide military defense to Iceland if it was needed. The countries of Poland, Germany, France, China, and Japan all have a good diplomatic relationship with Iceland. Because of past disputes, Iceland and Great Britain have a rocky relationship, but for the most part, Iceland is working to build positive international relationships with everyone. |
