The Abenaki, who lived mostly in northern New England. The Delaware were in the Delaware River Valley north into southern New York. The Mohican (sometimes called Mahican) were in the Hudson River Valley, from the Catskill Mountains north to the southern end of Lake Champlain. The tribes were also located east to the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts and in northwest Connecticut to the Green Mountains of southern Vermont. The Massachuset tribe was in Massachusetts. The Metac (sometimes called "Manhattan" meaning island people) were on Long Island, New York. The Narragansett tribes occupied Narragansett Bay and western Rhode Island. The Nipmue tribes were in central Massachusetts and other parts of New England. The Pennacock (which means "at the bottom of the hill") were in southern and central New Hampshire, and parts of Massachusetts and southern Maine. The Poctumtu were in western Massachusetts. The Wampanoag were in southern Massachusetts and eastern Rhode Island. This group of Native Americans celebrated the first Thanksgiving with the Pilgrims. The famous Squanto was a member of this tribe. We have just named a lot of Native American tribes. Each tribe was unique and interesting.

Research one of these tribes that was in existence during colonial days. Tell how they lived, the way they governed themselves, their houses, whether they farmed or hunted, did they stay in one general area or move about seasonally, and any other interesting information that you find.
