Have you ever thought much about some of the "strange" names you see in different areas of our nation?

iroquoian longhouseFor those of you who live in the east, or have traveled to the east, you will notice that many places today have been named after these early Native Americans tribes.

Just for fun, let's look at what the meaning of some of the Iroquois tribal names are:

The Algonquin called the Iroquois the Iroqu, which means "rattlesnakes." Remember how aggressive and warlike they were.

The Mohawk were "people of the flint."

The Oneida were "people of the standing stone."

The Onondaga were "people of the hills," "keepers of the fire," and "wampum keepers."

The Seneca were "great hill people" and the "keepers of the western door."

The Tuscarora were "shirt-wearing people."
