Think about the novel’s title and decide how it relates to the rest of the novel.
The Giver is not just the title of Lois Lowry’s novel―it’s also the name of one of its main characters. What is the Giver’s role in the story? How does he affect Jonas, the novel’s protagonist?
The Giver transmits “memories” of the past to Jonas, including information about how the Community was created and why it works the way it does. This knowledge causes Jonas to change how he thinks and feels about the Community. It also affects the way he feels about his own life and his role as Receiver. By the end of the novel, the Giver has given Jonas more than he was supposed to, and Jonas has given something back.
