Let's break it down...

In the video, you learned how to ask someone where they are from and to say where you are from. Francine, a young French-speaking student, is introducing herself. Read the text below and see if you recognize any phrases from the video.

Bonjour! Je m’appelle Francine. Je suis française. Je suis de France. Mes parents sont congolais. Ma famille vient du Congo.

D’où viens-tu ?

Je suis de France.

Ma famille vient du Congo.

D’où viens-tu?

In the video you also heard how to say where you come from. Practice some more with the example below.

Je viens des États-Unis

What does this expression mean?

I come from the United States. Unis means united, and états means states.

Remember, il means he in French, and elle means she. You should be able to figure out the meaning of the following sentences.

In French, the question word means where. (Don’t confuse it with the word ou without an accent, which means or. Both words sounds exactly the same.)

You will practice using with the verb venir, to come, but later you will see it in other situations. With an accent, always mean where.

So, what is the sentence D’où vient-il asking?

Where is he from?

Question

How do you ask Where is she from in French?

D’où vient-elle?

The preposition de meaning from or of becomes d’ in front words starting with a vowel.

Question

How do you say He comes from Canada in French?

Il vient du Canada.
