This sanctuary is called the Ka’bah, or “cube”. It is cubed-shaped, and about 40 feet wide on each side. The door is 7 feet from the ground, and can only be entered by a moveable staircase made specifically for that purpose. Most of the outside of the Ka’bah is covered with curtains and carpets. The most important item inside is a black oval stone about 7-9 inches in size. This stone is said to have been given to Abraham by an angel. It was originally white, but over the years it has turned black from all the kisses of people seeking forgiveness. The Ka’bah, the well at Zamzam, and the city of Mecca are important to all Muslims.
Followers of Islam are called Muslims, and Islam is an Arabic word meaning “one who submits.” Muslims, like Jews and Christians, believe in one God whom they call Allah, and accept Muhammad as his messenger.
