What is a map?

Take a look at each of the maps shown below. Let’s see if you can tell how each map is different from one another.

Road Map: This type of map is used by drivers. It shows streets and highways that connect different towns and cities.

Neighborhood Map: This type of map shows the houses, stores, and roads that are in a town.

How are the maps different? Some maps are used when looking at different countries. Some are used when exploring a neighborhood. Some are even used to see how a home is laid out. A map is a drawing of all or part of Earth’s surface. It shows us where things are. We learned what the cardinal directions are and how they are useful on a map. In this lesson, you will learn about all the different types of maps and you will be able to draw your own map by the end of this lesson!
