An old treasure map with a golden compass.

Are you ready to hide some buried treasure? That's just what you will do today! You may want to dig up your treasure later, so you will need to create a map. Follow these steps to make your map.

Make a Treasure Map

A bear wearing a blue hat and hiking boots. The bear has a walking stick, backpack, and a map. The bear is going on a treasure hunt with his friend the crow.
  1. Bury or hide an object in your house, apartment, or backyard (to represent the treasure).
  2. Create a map of steps:
    1. On a sheet of paper, draw a map of your backyard, room, or house.
    2. Draw an "X" on your map where your treasure is buried or hidden.
    3. Draw a compass rose on your map. Remember to use the cardinal directions.
    4. Create clues to the treasure by picking a starting spot for your map. Use the four directions (example: go 2 steps to the north, then 5 steps south, etc.) to lead someone from your starting point to the X.
  3. After you finish your directional clues, color your map.

How did you do? Now, see if a friend or family member can find your treasure by following your map!
