Maps are very important to us. Maps help show us real-life areas in a different way. In this activity, we'll look at the parts of a map and how they can help us better understand a map. Click each word to find out how that map element is important.
A compass rose shows direction. It shows the cardinal directions: north, south, east, and west.
Every map has a title. The title shows us what the map represents.
Map keys are also called legends. Map keys are little boxes, usually in the bottom corners of maps. They tell us what each symbol means on the map.
Grids on a map show us locations. Grids help locate points on a map.
Map elements are very useful. They all help us gain a better understanding of maps. Use these elements in the activities to come!
