If you have ever watched a track and field competition, either live or on TV, you may have seen some of the competitors throwing a discus like the athlete above. A discus thrower spins around and around and then launches the discus as far as she can. Spinning an object at high speed and then letting go projects the object in a direction that is tangent to the circle created by the spinning motion. So what does being tangent to the circle mean?
