The main issue in the election was the war. The Democrats wanted to make peace, even if that meant Confederate independence, but Lincoln was determined to restore the Union and end slavery. At the beginning of the campaign, Lincoln’s chances did not look good because the North seemed to be losing the war and the public was not greatly in favor of continuing to fight with such great losses. In the next few months, however, significant Union victories in Mobile Bay, Atlanta, and the Shenandoah Valley helped change the mood in the North. Citizens once again supported Lincoln’s war effort, and he won with 55% of the popular vote.

Women on both sides of the conflict assumed many different roles, both on the homefront and with the military. At home, women became teachers, office workers, salesclerks, factory and government workers, and farm managers. For the military, they rolled bandages, wove blankets, made ammunition, collected food and supplies for soldiers, and became nurses and spies.

The Hunley was a submarine built by the South that was used in the Civil War. It was the first submarine to sink a ship in combat.
