How can you create your own pattern?

Throughout this lesson you have seen how different inspirational images are developed into patterns that can be used for various forms of designs. Let's look at these images as examples.

A literal pattern using a sofa as inspiration may work for the background of a specific ad for sofas; an interpretive pattern showing elements of a sofa might be used for it's flexibility as the background for the website of an entire furniture store; while an expressive pattern conveying the comfort, warmth, and style of a sofa may used for the background in a series of new ads showing the desirability of a new line of sofas.

For this project, you will choose one image from an online source or that you have taken as inspiration to create your own patterns. Choose a theme for your design, and then design two patterns inspired by that image. Each pattern should fall into one of the three pattern categories (literal, interpretive, or expressive). Do not use the same pattern category more than once. Make sure you include the image that inspired your pattern along with your two pattern designs.

Each final pattern design should be a three inch by three inch square. The pattern can be made with the intention to be repeating like a tile or to be stand alone; but its effectiveness to be repeated will not factor into your grade. You will not need to worry about the edges of a pattern lining up with the opposite side.

Be sure to label each file with your name, the item name and include the original inspiration images. This will make sure that your instructor can grade your work properly.

You will be graded using the rubric shown below. Each image will be worth 15 points.

  5 Points - Excellent 3 Points - Good 1 Point - Poor
Pattern Theme The pattern clearly matches the theme of the original imagery. The pattern adequately matches the theme of the original imagery. The pattern does not match the theme of the original imagery.
Quality The pattern is exceptionally well designed. The pattern is acceptably designed. The pattern  is distractedly messy or very poorly designed.
Effort The image shows an exceptional degree of student effort. The image shows an adequate amount of effort. The image shows the minimal amount of effort.
