What should you do in the editing stage?

Now your essay is almost fully baked! The editing stage is for final touches. In this stage, focus on the correct use of language. Reread the essay closely, and fix any problems with grammar, spelling, or punctuation.

As you edit, take special care to find and correct any errors in pronoun use. Click each tab below to review correct pronoun use and common mistakes.

When a pronoun is the singular subject of a sentence or clause, use I, he, she, it, or you.

She kind of took me under her wing.

I made new friends who liked me for who I am.

When a pronoun is the plural subject, use you, we, or they.

When someone tried to bully me, they would step in and defend me.

We played, and I won two out of three games!

When a pronoun is used as a singular object, use me, him, her, it, or you.

Sometimes, they tripped me in the hall.

When a pronoun is used as a plural object, use you, us, or them.

After 9/11, people who looked like us started to be bullied.

Sometimes, you may use a pronoun as part of an expression like the one below.

We gamers stick together and stand up for each other.

To figure out which pronoun form is correct, try the sentence with each pronoun by itself.

Us stick together and stand up for each other.

or

We stick together and stand up for each other.

A possessive pronoun indicates possession of the object that follows it in the sentence. Possessive pronouns include my, our, your, his, her, its, and their.

Your life will change if you follow my simple advice.

Without our bikes, we had to walk two miles home.

Remember that a possessive pronoun should never have an apostrophe. The word it’s is a contraction for “it is.”

My bike lost its wheel as a result of the accident.

Personal Narrative, Step 5

In your personal narrative file for this module, copy and paste another version of your revised draft and label it “Edited Draft.” Then, edit your essay. First, find and correct any mistakes in your use of pronouns. Then, look for other errors that might make your essay harder for readers to follow.

When you have made all of the needed edits to your essay, save your work and go on to the next stage in the process.
