What’s the first step in writing your narrative?

In this lesson, you will share one or more personal “light bulb” moments in a narrative essay. You won’t have to write your essay all at once, though. Instead, you will build it step by step. The first step is to analyze the writing prompt and decide what to write about.

Here are some questions to ask yourself as you think about the prompt.

The purpose is to help readers understand something important about you.

The audience will be your teacher and possibly other students.

Your task is to write a personal narrative. This narrative should achieve its purpose by sharing one or more personal experiences.

Personal Narrative, Step 1

In a new document, write down some ideas for your personal narrative that helps readers understand some aspect of who you are. These should be experiences that helped you realize something about yourself. Save the file as “Personal Narrative.” You will need to keep this file open as you will be adding to it throughout the lesson.
