What Spanish words do you need to know to communicate in an online classroom?

PDF DownloadCongratulations, you’re in an online course. While that means that you can show up to class in your p.J.’s, it also means that you need to be familiar with some terminology and practices related to online class-taking. Otherwise, you may get very lost very quickly.

There are several words that you’ll need to know in Spanish to be able to ask good clarifying questions and to communicate with your teacher.

  1. Palabra - means “word”
  1. Repita - means “repeat,” but I bet you guessed that since repita is a cognate of the English word repeat.
  1. El archivo - means “the file”
  1. Pregunta - means “question”
  1. Respuesta - means “answer”
  1. - means “yes”
  1. No - means “no,” although the pronunciation of no in Spanish is very short--“No”
  1. Hacer Clic - means “to click,” as in with a mouse
  1. Saludos - means “greetings”
  1. Querido - means “dear,” as in the beginning of a letter. Other forms of this word include queridos, querida, queridas

If you were to write an email to your teacher, you would write something like, “Querido profesor” or “Querido maestro” for the introductory line. Make sure to match the gender of the teacher to the gender of the term.
