A direct kick is awarded if a player commits a foul or some form of illegal conduct.

free kick

A direct free kick is given for intentionally fouling an opponent in the following manner:

  • tripping
  • holding
  • playing the ball with a hand or arm (except goalkeeper)
  • kicking or attempting to kick
  • jumping at an opponent
  • charging from behind
  • charging in a violent or dangerous manner
  • striking or attempting to strike
  • pushing

If a defending player intentionally commits one of the direct-foul offenses within the defender’s penalty area, a penalty kick is given from the 12 yard mark of the opposing team.
