Lets look at some direct restarts.

Unlike an indirect kick, a direct kick can go directly into the goal without touching another person. If a direct free kick is kicked directly into the opponents’ goal, a goal is awarded. If a direct free kick is kicked directly into the team’s own goal, a corner kick is awarded to the opposing team. There are several types of direct kicks. Direct Free Kick

corner kick

A corner kick is awarded to the attacking team if the ball crosses the goal line having been last played by a member of the defending team. The kick is taken from within the 1-yard arc of the corner of the field closest to where the ball crossed the goal line. Players defending the kick must stand 10 yards from the kick when it is taken.

penalty kick

Any foul that incurs a direct free kick is punished by the award of a penalty kick to the opposing team if the foul was committed by a defending player in the defender’s own penalty area. The penalty kick is taken from the penalty mark, which is a midline spot 12 yards from the goal. The penalty kicker taker must be clearly identified to the referee.

All players other than the defending goalkeeper and the penalty taker must be outside the penalty area, behind the penalty mark, and at least 10 yards from the ball (i.e. outside the penalty arc) until the ball is kicked. The goalkeeper must remain between the goalposts on the goal line facing the ball until the ball is kicked, but may move from side to side along the goal line.

direct free kick

Whenever any of the infractions are outside the penalty area or are committed by the offensive team in the defensive penalty area, then a direct kick is awarded. The kick is taken from where the foul occurred, unless that was within the fouled team’s goal area, in which case it may be taken from anywhere within the goal area. The ball should be stationary prior to being kicked. Opponents must remain 10 yards from the ball until the ball is in play.

The ball becomes in play as soon as it is kicked and moves, unless the kick was taken from within the kicking team’s penalty area, in which case it is in play once it has passed directly beyond the penalty area.

The referee will signal the direct kick violation with a tilting arm pointed in the attacking direction of the team that is to be awarded the ball. Defending players must always be 10 yards from the ball.
