Football Referee Hand Signals

A referee and two assistant referees (line judges) officiate the game. The referee serves as the timekeeper and enforces the rules. This referee decides all disputes and may put a player out of the game for repeated fouling. The linesmen determine which team gets possession of the ball after it goes out of bounds. Once the ball has crossed the touchline or goal line or a foul is called, the referee will designate by hand signal which team gets possession of the ball. The linesmen also notify the referee when they see a player commit a foul. The job of the officials is to allow play to be free-flowing and within the spirit of the game while maintaining safety for the players.
