What is the best way to keep track of spending when using a debit card?

Banks offer “debit cards” which can be used in conjunction with your checking account. By using this card when purchasing anything, the amount is automatically deducted from your checking account balance. The nice thing about using a debit card is that you don't have to take time at a store writing a check. However, it is very important to enter this amount in your checking account register as a deduction from your balance. The seller or vendor issues you a receipt that shows this amount. Record the transaction immediately to keep your checkbook current and accurate. If you use a debit card for a transaction, you must check this amount off in your registry and on the bank statement, as well. In your check register you can use the code DEB or DC for Debit/Debit Card.

The example below shows a debit card transaction using the code DC.

Codes - ACH: ACH Payment | ATM: Cash Withdrawal | BP: Bill Payment | DC: Debit Deposit | SF: Service Fee | WT: Wire Transfer
