Solid solutions can be formed when solids, liquids, or gases dissolve in a solid. Many metal alloys (such as steel, sterling silver, brass, and bronze) are mixtures of solids forming solid solutions. The metals are dissolved into each other at high temperatures.
An example of liquid dissolving in a solid solution is when ether (solute) dissolves in rubber (solvent).
An example of a gas dissolving in a solid is when hydrogen gas (solute) dissolves in palladium (solvent) which is a solid. (Palladium is an element.)
