Now that you have learned about liquid solutions and mixtures, complete the following experiment.

To do these experiments on liquid solutions and mixtures you will need:

  • Eight glass jars with lids
  • Water
  • A spoon for stirring
  • Vinegar
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Solid laundry soap
  • Liquid hand, dish, or laundry soap
  • Flour
  • Cooking oil
  • Ground up chalk
  • Dirt from outside

  1. Label seven of the jars with the name of the following substances: vinegar, rubbing alcohol, solid laundry soap, liquid soap, flour, ground up chalk, and dirt. Add hot water to the seven jars.

  2. One at a time, mix a small amount of each of the substances with the water in the jar labeled with its name.

  3. Put on the lids and shake each jar well.

  4. In the mixture data table record whether each mixture was a solution, identify the solvent and solute (if it is a solution) for a mixture state if it is miscible or immiscible.

  5. In the eighth jar add a small amount of vinegar and a small amount of oil.

  6. Put the lid on and shake well.

  7. Wait one minute and fill in the data table.
