What are the key elements of a script?

Whether you're attending a live theater performance or watching a television show, you expect to see certain things, such as a consistent set of characters and a logical series of event. These elements are included in every play, regardless of its type. Use the slides below to review some essential elements that your own script should include.

Characters

All plays and screenplays include characters, each with his or her distinct personality.

Setting

Setting is the time or place of the story.

Plot

The events of a play are what happens in the story. Generally, the plot includes the exposition, the rising action, climax, and the resolution.

Conflict

The events of a play happen in response to problem, or conflict. The characters work to solve the problem throughout the plot.

Scenes

A scene is a small part, or section, of an act in which the action occurs in a single location. In all forms of drama, the scenes and their action occur on stage (or on-screen).
